Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the winter 2014 edition of The Courier newsletter. I am thrilled to serve as your SLA Toronto Chapter president for 2014, and I am looking forward to a great year of learning, networking and of course, lots of fun. I do not plan to take on the year alone, and with me I will have a team that is ready to make the year a huge success – the 2014 Executive Board:

Bernadette Roca – President-Elect
Kim Silk
– Past President
Helen Kula
– Secretary
Stephanie Quail
– Technology Director
Carmen Lee
– Membership Director
Emmeline Hobbs and Patricia Aspinwall
– Programming Directors
Laura Warner – Partner Relations Director
Christine DeLuca – First Five Years Director

In 2014, we will tackle some big challenges, and we will continue to grow SLA by attracting new members and partnerships. A focus this year will be to improve upon our relationship with the Faculty of Information & Media Studies (FIMS) at Western, and reach out as much as possible to our colleagues outside of Toronto. We also plan to evaluate the SLA Toronto website, and where needed, make improvements to the layout, as well as sprucing things up behind the scenes.

Now, that’s not all we’ll be doing, but the board will keep you updated throughout the year using the listserv and The Courier.

In mid-January, Bernadette Roca and I had the honour of attending the SLA Leadership Summit in Memphis, Tennessee. It was not only a great opportunity to meet the leaders from other chapters and divisions, but it also provided us with insight into the theme for SLA this year, and more details about the annual conference in Vancouver. The 2014 theme, announced by SLA President Kate Arnold, is “beyond borders” – this includes reaching out professionally beyond your comfort zone, and more literally, reaching out and connecting to other associations and colleagues across the globe.

Did you know that this year’s annual conference is in Vancouver? It is rare that we have an opportunity to attend a conference without a major border crossing, not to mention that this is a chance to show our support for the Western Canada chapter, and completely overrun the conference center with Canadians. I strongly encourage everyone to attend in June, as it is a great investment in your own professional development and an outstanding networking opportunity. You can learn more and register for the conference here. I hope to see you there!
